Insights on growing and building better digital systems.
Practical writing on growth, search, websites, automation, platforms and where AI genuinely helps.

From John
I start with your business outcome.
I’ve been working in digital marketing since 2001 — long enough to watch plenty of technologies arrive, get oversold and eventually find their useful place.
I don’t start with a platform or a channel. I start with what the business needs to achieve, then work backward into growth, search, websites, systems, platforms or applications.
The sections below follow that same logic: grow first, get found, build the right thing, then make the system work better.
Grow first.
More traffic is not enough. Growth comes from connecting acquisition, conversion, product, measurement and customer behaviour into one working system.
“Growth is not a channel. It is what happens when acquisition, the product and the numbers finally agree with each other.”John M Granskou
Digital growth as a system: how product, SEO, conversion and measurement work together
Durable growth does not come from running more campaigns. It comes from designing acquisition, product experience, conversion, retention and measurement as one connected system where each part improves the others.
Get found.
Build the search, content and information architecture that makes the business easier to discover and easier for search engines to understand.
SEO as architecture: why search visibility is a systems problem
Search visibility is structural, not tactical. Why SEO is better understood as architecture — content systems, technical structure, and crawlability — than as keywords or plugins.
Build a better digital home.
A business website should do more than look current. It should perform, convert, remain accessible and evolve without requiring another rebuild.
When should you rebuild a website instead of redesigning it?
A redesign changes presentation. A rebuild changes architecture. Confusing the two produces a site that looks new and behaves exactly like the one it replaced.
Make the business work better.
Remove repetitive work, connect disconnected systems and build workflows that move information where it needs to go.
“Most businesses I meet do not need more software. They need the software they already pay for to talk to itself.”John M Granskou
From fragmented stack to integrated platform
Stitched-together tools create gaps that cost time and lose data. Why an integrated platform approach — one system for website, content, search, and operations — outperforms a fragmented stack as a business grows.
Build a platform.
Design recurring-revenue platforms around accounts, subscriptions, listings, payments, permissions and operations.
Marketplace vs directory: what's the difference?
A directory helps people find information. A marketplace lets several sides act on it. The difference is architectural — accounts, ownership, workflows and recorded exchange — not a matter of design.
Build an application.
Plan the MVP, user accounts, APIs, integrations, performance and ongoing application lifecycle around real user workflows.
What does an MVP app actually need?
A first release fails far more often from being wide and unfinished than from being narrow. An MVP is not a cut-down version of everything — it is one workflow taken all the way to a real outcome, with the rest deferred on purpose.
Extend the application experience.
Build browser-based applications that deliver app-like experiences across devices, without committing to a technology before the user need is clear.
Is WordPress Still Relevant? How PWAs or Progressive Web Apps are Changing Websites and Apps
WordPress, progressive web apps and native apps solve different problems. A practical guide to what a PWA actually is, what it can and cannot replace, and how to choose the right architecture.
Apply AI where it belongs.
Use AI where it improves a real product, workflow or decision — not simply because AI is available.
“I only recommend AI when I can name the decision it improves. Otherwise it is an expensive feature.”John M Granskou

Not sure what actually needs to change?
Tell me what is not working. I'll look at whether the problem is growth, search, the website, the system behind it — or something else entirely.
